The Community Service Officer (CSO) is an unarmed civilian employee who supports public safety operations by performing a variety of non-law enforcement duties, including security assignments, administrative tasks, and related campus community service functions. The CSO is not a sworn law enforcement officer and does not perform tasks legally restricted to sworn law enforcement officers.
Job Duties:
- Patrol campus on foot, bike, or a vehicle looking for and reporting safety hazards, persons in need of assistance or identifying violations of university regulations. - Provide assistance in reporting violations of university regulations to appropriate campus offices. - Conducting premise inspections and opening and closing buildings. - Provide escort to members of the campus community requesting assistance. - Contribute to traffic control as needed including issuing parking citations. - Conduct crime prevention awareness training to members of the campus community. - Respond with care and compassion to calls for service to include: welfare checks, vehicle lockouts, dead batteries, lost property complaints, noise complaints, requests involving student medical needs, other non criminal calls as assigned, and responding with a law enforcement officer if requested. - Provide stationary or mobile security at Bucknell owned/leased/controlled property. - Provide bank escorts to University officials. - Provide general security support for university special events to include sporting events, commencement, student move in, reunion weekend and other alumni events. - Actively contribute to Bucknell's efforts to foster a diverse and inclusive campus community. - Support and promote the University's sustainability efforts to protect, maintain and increase the long-term viability and resilience of the University's environmental, social, and economic support systems. - Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED - Must be available to rotate shifts, work nights, weekends, and overtime - Ability to read and interpret manuals and codes - Must have a valid PA driver's license - Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check - Experience working with the public in a service oriented role - At least 20 years of age
Knowledge Skills and Abilities - Ability to communicate in a calm and professional manner with tact and sound judgment in high stress situations - Able to establish and maintain courteous and respectful interpersonal relationships with all university constituency groups. - Able to think logically, act quickly based upon reasonable evaluation of a situation. - Proven ability to work effectively and constructively with diverse constituencies - Ability to exercise sounds, independent judgment without significant supervision. - Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical languages - Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions. - Ability to mediate and/or resolve complicated issues and concerns. - Ability to work and associate with a diverse community in an effective, professional and courteous manner - Ability to perform a wide-variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines - Ability to observe and recall details and incidents - Must be able to use Microsoft office and other software - Must be able to communicate and use a portable radio
Physical Demands:
-Must be able to walk long distances -Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds -Must be able to work in various weather conditions -Must be able to work nights, weekends, rotating shifts, overtime assignments -Must maintain and current and valid drivers license -Must be able to perform work under stress in an efficient and effective manner -Must be able to use a radio -Ability to stand for extended periods of time -Must be able to communicate both orally and in writing
Other Requirements:
All Public Safety personnel must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check, psychological examination, drug screen, and driving record check. All Public Safety personnel will be subject to yearly random drug screenings. Public Safety personnel must be available to work weekends and some holidays. This position is classified as part of essential services. Public Safety Personnel must be able to reach campus within 30 minutes of driving time in the event of an emergency. Public Safety personnel must work overtime when emergencies exist or when special programs require it. Work Type:
This is a full-time staff non-exempt, benefits eligible position.
This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.
Salary Range:
This is a staff non-exempt position with a hiring range of $15-17.79. The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
