Located five miles from downtown Boston, Tufts University is a Division III member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the highly-competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), the New England Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (NEISA) and the Inter-College Sailing Association (ICSA). Tufts students participate in 30 varsity sports, more than 20 club sports, and a variety of intramural sports. Since 2010, Tufts Athletics has won 11 NCAA team championships and 42 NESCAC team championships. After earning 8 consecutive top-10 national finishes in the Learfield Directors’ Cup competition, Tufts Athletics won Directors’ Cup in 2021-22. The rich tradition of sailing at Tufts includes 25 college sailing national championships and many All-American honorees. Tufts Athletics oversees the Physical Education Department and manages all athletics facilities, including the Steve Tisch Sports & Fitness Center that opened in 2012. The Department of Athletics provides student-athletes a dynamic, transformational experience on and off the field. They experience the joy of personal growth inherent in high level competition, while cultivating lifelong connections with teammates, the Tufts community and the world around us.

The head coach of women’s and co-ed sailing is responsible for effectively managing and operating all aspects of Tufts’ NCAA Division III women’s and coed sailing programs. This includes, but is not limited to, recruiting academically-qualified and athletically-talented high school athletes, leading and managing student-athletes and assistant coaches, organizing and running practices, creating and sustaining an environment that supports the Tufts mission, building a competitive schedule, operating the program within budgetary limits, managing administrative tasks effectively, and actively participating in alumni engagement and fundraising activities.

Basic Requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree; a minimum of five (5) years coaching experience
• Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to effectively coach the sport of sailing; demonstrated ability to develop and relate to student-athletes in an extremely competitive academic environment
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; Title IX and gender equity; and the mission of Tufts University
• Knowledge of the rules of the applicable sports governing body and a commitment to abide by them at all times
• Ability to recruit academically qualified and athletically talented student-athletes to Tufts
• Dedication to the full academic, athletic and social development of student-athletes
• Extensive knowledge of the sport and a sophisticated understanding of coaching strategies with a demonstrated ability to enhance student-athlete development
• Ability to communicate effectively and foster positive relations with fellow athletics department staff members, student-athletes and other members of the Tufts community, including faculty, staff, donors, alumni, and local community members
• Valid US driver’s license and ability to travel are required

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree
• Competitive collegiate playing experience
• Fundraising experience
