LOCATION OF POSITION
4-H Summer Intern positions are located throughout the state and each one is assigned to a county or regional office location. Each intern’s assigned projects will generally be managed in the area surrounding the office location. Much of the intern’s work may take place away from the office location.
DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
These positions are designed to provide hands-on experience for the intern and at the same time provide local and regional Extension Educators with extra needed help during the busy summer season.
4-H Summer Intern positions are contingent on local funding and will vary from 8 to 13 weeks in length. Many positions will begin in early June. Some positions will start at less than full-time and need to flex to full-time during peak periods such as during assigned events or local fairs. An intern will be assigned a project or focus depending on the local or regional need. Some interns may focus on more than one type of project. County-based positions will be working with the local county 4-H program and regional positions will be focused on specific programming areas, including Agronomy & Horticulture and Shooting Sports & Wildlife/ATV. A sampling of possible project assignments includes and is not limited to:
Assisting with day and/or resident camps
Assisting with coordinating county, regional and/or state programs, activities and events
Working with other summer 4-H programs and activities coordinated through a regional or state center
Assisting with youth leaders
Assisting with 4-H membership recruitment
Assisting with implementing strategies for reaching new audiences or enhancing current programs
Working with partner programs and helping to build partnerships
Working with volunteers
Assisting with media relations
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
The 4-H summer intern position is temporary and contingent on local funding. Complete information about the exact number and locations of internships is available by accessing the link under the “To Apply” section.
Each intern will report to an Extension Educator. That person will oversee the intern’s work and schedule.
Reimbursement for travel expenses is available. (Must provide own means for traveling throughout the assigned area).
Wage rate is $15.00 per hour. Payroll is processed each pay period according to submitted time cards.
Each hire is contingent on a State Criminal Background check clearance (or other checks as appropriate).
Education: A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate college student, may not have completed their undergraduate program, and may not have graduated in the Spring of 2023. Bachelor’s degree programs with a focus in youth development, education, human development, agriculture or natural resources are strongly preferred. The completion of at least two years of college is preferred.
Experience: Experience using computer software technology is required. 4-H youth development experience as a member and/or volunteer is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: An interest in/skill in working with young people and adults is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. An interest in an Extension career is preferred. Leadership ability, good judgment, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to work productively as part of a team are required. Must be available to work a flexible schedule including some nights and weekends.
Following University of Minnesota Safety of Minors policy, candidates must be at least 19 years old by the start date. As a primary staff member at events, the intern would be 2 years older than the oldest participant. If necessary to drive for the designated county, an intern must be 19 years old. To be qualified to chaperone an overnight event, the intern must be 21 years old. Requirements may vary by location.
Current 4-H members who are selected as interns, must have a willingness to forgo opportunities as a 4-H member that conflict with the responsibilities as an intern.
